Strange Abs Problem

Hey guys, I have been searching for awhile and havent really managed to find the same problem that I have. I drive a 1997 f150 supercab shortbox 4x4 with a auto and a 4.6 litre, with only rear abs brakes. Now my problem is with the brakes. The abs light comes on almost all the time but that I have read up on and can fix. The real problem is when I push the brake pedal down. It seems like the brakes need to be bled. I have tried that though and its not the problem. When I push the brakes down they are kind of squishy, and every so often they work fine, just like they should. Now it is my understanding that a brake system should be good and the pedal should push hard if the brakes are bled right. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance!

Can you pump your brakes several times and make them push hard? Sounds like a your master cylinder seal is leaking.

Well, when you pump it a few times it still seems somewhat spongey, and it actually doesnt seem to ever go low on brake fluid.

if you push on the brake pedal and hold does the pedal slowly go down. If so then I agree with Super Blue it is a master cylinder problem. If not have you checked all the lines and fittings for leaks?

I have checked for leaks and havent found any, as for the pedal, it doesnt seem to go down if you hold it.

It seems that you have air in your brake system. You should try to bleed your brakes again as they may still be some air in the system. Bleed the brakes in a X direction meaning if you started bleeding your left-front brakes, the next brake that should be bled should be at the right-rear brakes.

how old is the brake fluid, at this point I would replace the old brake fluid with new and see what happens. when brake fluid gets old it canget some what mushy. should be changed every two years, when condisation gets into it it breaks it down.
