Question dash lights

I need to replace some dash lights. I can't see my fuel gage at night one or two of the lights must be out. One is working. 1998 ford f 150 ext. How do I get to them?

You have to remove the instrument cluster. Get a Hayne's manual - it will give you the ritual - no special tools needed. The cluster itself is one piece with more than one plug-in on the back - don't worry - all the plugs are different sizes - it only goes together one way. Once you have it out, replace all the bulbs.

If you look under the Frequently Asks Questions folder. Scroll down untill you get to the odometer cluster replacement question. There is a link there that has some very good info. gymcoal has some step by step instructions on how to take that part of the dash apart.

It is a pretty easy job to get to them. While you've got it all out, why not upgrade to some white-face gauges? Unless you're trying to keep that stock look.

A decent set from eBay will run you around $50. Anything lower price than that and you will likely be disappointed with the quality of some of the components (from experience). I think the biggest pain I ran into with pulling the dash apart was dealing with the headlight switch. It was so frustrating that I ended up not putting the screw that is behind it back in. Other than that, piece of cake...as long as you fill up your gas tank and have your truck at operating temperature before pulling the needles or else it will take you a while to get them all back to where they should be if you just do the "guessing" game. Take a look at my gallery to see how the Reverse glow gauges look.
