temp guage problem

temp guage problem
stock temp guage runs normal all day ,but go out in morning on cold engine and temp guage still reads normal. it should read cold. turn key on and it drops back to cold,then operates fine then next morn the same thing. also oil guage runs normal till you shut off engine . turn motor off guage should drop down, but it stays at normal till you turn key on, then it resets its self. turn key off and it starts to rise to normal with motor off. what do you think? thanks.

This is normal depending on what type of guage the factory uses. The older Fords used a bi-metal type guage that when power was turned off, it cooled and the guage naturally went to zero. But GM and possibly the newer Fords(I am assuming this) uses a different type where you have two coils in the guage with a swing arm in the middle. Depending on which coil was stronger is where the needle rests. When the power is turned off, there is nothing pulling on the needle, and there is no return spring on the needle. So it either sits there, or it randomly moves, I guess depending on gravity.
