I broke the old **** off my l. air vent cable to replace it with the new Dennis Carpenter **** I bought a while back. The stock **** is held on by several ridges and looks like it was pushed on. The D C replacement is a threaded (10-32 thread) **** which appears to be the same as the glovebox ****. Obviously, this would not screw on or push on. Called Dennis Carpenter and was told that I would have to file down the end of the shaft that the **** fits on to the correct size and thread it with a 10-32 die or reorder heater/wiper ***** and file a flat place on the shaft for the set screw.
Has anyone else used the DC ***** and what method did you use to install them?
Thanks,
Jim
No direct experience, but if you don't want to go the threading route, I think you'd do just fine to put some ridges on the shaft with a file, drill out the **** so it just fits snugly, and use some two-part epoxy to hold it on. The ridges on the shaft will give the epoxy some bite so it doesn't slide off. Let's see if we can get some other ideas from folks.
After measuring the choke/vent shafts and a 10-32 bolt from a mower air cleaner, I found that all were 3/16 inch in diameter. I was able to thread the shafts without filing them down. Held it with two pairs of needle nose vice grips over masking tape. Once you get past the initial ridge on the shaft, it threads easy as the metal is soft on this shaft. ***** screw on tight.
When I pulled my new cig. lighter **** from the package I found that the threaded stem had been installed crooked. Also found that the chrome flange on the D C reproduction **** was nothing like the original. Having nothing to lose since I purchased this over a year ago, I pulled the stem out of the new **** and found that the hole was drilled at an angle when it was manufactured. I broke the **** off my original lighter and was able to thread the rough shaft with the 10-32 die. It does not look like it is threaded when you finish but a vent/choke **** will screw on and tighten up and you can use your original chrome lighter bezel. The threads are not as tight as the ones on the choke/vent shafts but will work and can be doped up with epoxy if needed.
