Trans conversion question

1974 F-100---

I am going to install a C6 in my truck tomorrow which presently has a 3-speed manual in it.

Will I need to change out any of the crossmembers or the trans-mounts in order to accomodate the new, larger tranny? I realise that I will need to shorten my driveline, etc-etc, but I just need to prepare myself with the clearance/mount situation.

You will more than likely need to pick the local boneyards for the crossmember and driveshaft off of a similar truck.

Trans conversion question

I am thinking of puting in an automatic tranny in the future, I have a 3 speed manual now. Could anyone give me a price quote on a used automatic transmtion for a 77 F-100 w/ 302? And what would I have to do to put it in?

Trans conversion question

Guys, To swap in a good used TRUCK C4 automatic (this is the C4 with an extra set of bands and clutches)and unless you are heavy into drag racing, or overloading your truck carrying, or pulling you'll never hurt this LIGHT TRUCK transmission, espesselly if you use an aftermarket auxulliary cooler in addition to your factory cooler in the radiator.
You can use your existing crossmember, and most likely the same trans mount as is on your manual trans now, I was able to use my brand new mount I'd bought for my C6 application on the C4.
You MAY need to move your crossmember forward on back to line up with the C4 once you've got the C4 bolted up and on its way up to the crossmember, there are extra holes already there for this.
You will need to obtain an Automatic steering column from a junkyard, a fixed column should not cost too much.
And to do this swap right you should get the kick down linkage, and may be the carb from the donor truck (I've successfully taken the kick down arm from a junk carb, and put it into my good carb during this swap)you will also need to get some type of trans cooler, and a vacuum "tree" for your modulator to hook up to, if you don't already have one.
You just might get lucky and have your driveshaft fit OK, but you'll need to use a yoke from a C4, as the splines are longer inside.
You can use your existing starter but you'll need to put one flat washer between it and the plate when installing.
My "guestimate" for PARTS cost is around $250.00, which should include a GOOD used C4, steering column, new trans cooler, small parts, ect.

Trans conversion question

Good reply SuperCab, thanks!

However, I'm going with the C6 because:
1. I am going to tow with the truck, and
2. I already have the C6.

Anyone compared the crossmembers/mounts from a manual trannied truck to one from an automatic??

Trans conversion question

Gene, I just re-read your post, sorry, I didn't understand you were going with a C6, You will have to drill out the PERCHES that your crossmember rests on, and re-bolt them further back, again the holes are already there, just be sure & use GRADE 8 bolts, and may be lock nuts, but the C6 should bolt right up using your original mount, you will have to shorten your driveshaft for the extra length of the C6.
