I have a 1986 f-150 and the truck can be started without the key in it. I was wondering if anyone else has had the same problem and if so what should I do to fix it and how much would it cost. I do use the key to start it anyways because I still have to push the button on the steering wheel to release the key...I do that so I know i turned the key off....otherwise if I don't it might be still on and run the battery down.

Its just worn out ...I have replaced so many like yours from that model yr . If you want it repaired , buy a new one . Next turn the key to the On position , under the key you will see a small indentation , take a pick or a drill bit that will fit in that hole and push the pin in , next remove the whole key and switch . Install the new one with the key turned to the On postion and slide it in . You will now be back to the old days of an ignition that needs a key ...Good Luck ,

Thanks for the info. I went and turned the switch on and couldn't find the indentation. I didn't want to break anything. Is it in between the silver metal switch and the black steering wheel part? Also should I go to a junk yard to get a new switch or order it from the dealer?

The indentation is just below the switch ...its sort of has a V shape . Its kinda hard to see . Id go to the dealer or any parts place to buy one , they are inexpensive and come with a new key .
