I have 87 XLT 2.9L and got my self in trouble.
1. EGR valve won't come off. I got the 2 bolts off the TB but the bottom of it that goes to pipe that goes into exhaust manifold is not budging. Any ideas?? Plus What size is that nut? i have no wrenches big enough.
2. ECT sensor i hard to find. can i get a description. I think it's bolted into the water pump but not sure, need mucho help with wrench size on that too if what i found is in fact it.
3. O2 sensor is big too what size wrench for that? I drowned it in liquid wrench stuff cuz it's all rusted. Is there a special socket for it or not?
Took what feels like half the dang engine apart getting to this stuff and now need to put back together soon so hope someone has some help.
thanx

"2. ECT sensor i hard to find. can i get a description. I think it's bolted into the water pump but not sure, need mucho help with wrench size on that too if what i found is in fact it." -- ECT is in the intake manifold, just behind the thermostat housing. There are actually two sensor there. One with 1 wire that feeds the dash temperature gauge, and the other, with 2 wires, that feeds the EEC-IV computer.
"3. O2 sensor is big too what size wrench for that? I drowned it in liquid wrench stuff cuz it's all rusted. Is there a special socket for it or not?" -- I think it's a 7/8 inch wrench. I've always managed to get my O2 sensors off with an open end wrench, but you can get a special socket for O2 sensors if you feel so inclined.
MY 1989 doesn't have an EGR but I just had the EGR off of my 2000 and it's bigger than 1". I used a quality adjustable wrench, did you put some liquid wrench etc to break the rust, warming it up a little might help too.
Well last night i bought the special O2 sensor socket(they were out of box wrenches in the size i needed (figures))
replaced sensor in 10 minutes. Put the rest of the stuff back together as is. tomorrow I try emissions again before free retest limit expires. Will post results. Thanx for the "tips" Fazang out....
Well to conclude this I replaced O2 sensor and changed 32" super swampers to 24" tires, then got tested again. Passed with CO at 147 limit is 160. Last time got 171.
chagned tires cuz not sure what info speed sensor gives to computer.
Fazang out....
