check engine light

i have a 1994 explorer xlt and wanted to do the self test for the codes the directions says to jump self test input to sig rtn to start there is no self test input [ sti trigger ] on my vehicle just the 6 pin plug am i missing something or is there another way to trigger the codes for testing i have a 4.0 v-6 with auto trans and ac hope you can help thanks j94tbird

Take another look at your test port. There is a plastic shroud with the label "EEC TEST" stamped on top of it. If you remove the shroud from it's mounting (with wires attached) turn it upside down and you'll see the six pin plug mounted inside. Next to the six pin plug is the single wire sti plug. It's not really evident that there are two seperate plugs inside the shroud, but if you slide the six pin plug out the single wire connector should remain until you pull it out also. If it's not there, look around the general area in case someone else pulled it out and left it out. It should be within about one foot (the length of the wire) from the mounting of the EEC test port shroud. If it's not there, look for a cut wire.
