Smile Engine Temp?

Hey guys, have a quick question for you. I had a problem with my engine getting hot. I didn't really think it was (the factory guage was telling me it was!!). Replaced the factory guage with a Autometer mechanical guage. The question is now the Autometer guage is reading low. The highest temp it has reached is 170 degrees. The truck is a 75 3/4ton 4x4. The engine is mildly hopped up (cam, intake, carb, headers etc.) Thanks for the responses in advance. Joonyer

heating gauge

170 not that low what thermostate u running
check it by putting a blanket in front of radiator to stop cooling air from going through radiator and see if temp goes up, sorry for the last post i sent didnt read it correctly duh, also dont let engine get too hot with blanket in front of radiator if gauge does not go up soon after reaching 170 remove blanket and give it air

Have you tried one of the infared temp sensors thereare now? Just aim at where the temp sensor is in the block and you know instantly how hot it is. I got one a Sears for $50 bucks and keep it in my truck just for this reason. Temp gauge pegged and actually temp was 195 with a 180 thermostat isnt hot enough to worry about, but moved the needle haf the scale on the truck's temp gauge. Now 220 would worry me. But I know for sure right now and it even has a lazer pointer so you know where you are aiming.
