engine knock
posted this in engine forums, so lets see what I can get here. Have a 93 explorer, 134,000 4.0. Engine has developed a knock ( more like a tapping sound) which only happens when car is stopped and in gear (its an automatic). no knocking when ideling and in park or neutral. Drive and it's fine. It's not a ping, but sounds like it could be coming from lower part of engine. Haven't had a chance to investigate it yet. Any thoughts would be aprreciated.
Also, any suggestions on possible repair. Dont want to spend a lot, and if it's not to big of a job will do myself.

Could be most anything, try looking at exhaust manifold leak, fan belt, belt tensioner; put it in gear with parking brake on, engine running and block your wheels, and crawl up under it and see exactly where its coming from.
