Ford Kills Hurricane Engine Program
#48
The old I6 was a great engine. I'd like to see them do it up again and stuff it in the new F-150s. I mean if GM can do an I5 and I6 Vortech engine then ford should be able to do something under the hood of the new F1's. Use stuff from the MOD stock that they have now, change it up a bit and build a six. It'd keep costs low enough to make it affordable.
After all...they can take a 4.6L Mustang engine, and build a 351 cube V10... so they should be able to do this with a Six.
Only problem is the hood room under on the new trucks, i don't know if it would fit or not.

Whats the last great V8 Ford had? IMO Ford needs a groundbreaking V8 that will make noise in the market like the Hemi has. The Hurricane may have been it, but if its cancled Ford will continue to lag behind in the engine/performance department. Furthermore, they need a powerplant to put into their performance hehicles like the Lightning, Mustang, and GT-40. A v10 or V12 would fit nicely in the L and GT, while a nice V8 would fit nicely in the Mustang. All the performance engines they have now are based of the 5.4, and are modified to put out horsepower. They need to take a page out of Chevrolets, and Dodge's books and make a nice N/A motor to back their perfromance cars. Just my opinion on the matter.
Best as always.

I would say that the 00 Cobra R 5.4 was the last great V-8. 385 HP and 385 ft-lbs, all naturaly aspirated. I beleive this motor is still available in Australia, or at least it was for the either the 03 or 04 model year, best I can find now is the 348 HP (260kW) 5.4. Not to mention Australia has a 245 HP inline 4.0 (naturally aspirated,) and a Turbo 4.0 I-6 making 320 HP. Why can't we have those here.

Yo'll need to select technical in the pull down box to get the specs.

AG4.0 if you have kept an eye on the Cleveland plant you will notice that the Hurricane gasoline version is in limbo as Ford management tries to figure out how to respond to the governments of the USA, Canada, and the friendly people from the California Air Resouces Board.
After a recent meeting, the California and Canada rules are tough, a 30 percent reduction in greenhouse gases. The US government is set on increasing fuel economy for trucks to the point wher diesels will become fairly common in trucks.
Work on the gasoline motor will continue, but there is no way a 400Hp 6.2l V8 in an f150 Crew 4x4 is going to meet the 22.2 mpg city/highway cycle and that is THE POINT...the government does not want us driving those vehicles anymore. The only way to meet these governmental requirements and still offer a variety of trucks, is simply Diesel.
The Austrailans do not worry about such things but then again a Falcon BA is about $48k in Ozzie land so few are able to by such vehicles.
I am sure a lot of developments will come along but the other manufactures are going to diesel for their pickups and SUV'S as well. The deck is stacked against any wide scale use of a gasoline V8 until someone figures out how to meet the standards with a 5000lb truck with 400 hp.
A six speed transmission helps but not enough.

Here is the one with 290kW (387hp)
http://www.fpv.com.au/index.asp?targ...161&type_id=45
It is still available (I have an 05 - check my gallery).
We also have a turbo 4.0l I6 making 360hp, as well as the 320hp version.
http://www.fpv.com.au/index.asp?link_id=2.440
This engine also makes 412lbft of torque from 2000rpm to 4500rpm!!!
Not bad for a car.
I have a video of one of these 4.0l dynoing at 1000hp with a stock block, don't know how to upload it though.
Any suggestions of a site I can upload a video to for free?
As for the BA Falcon being expensive, the base car costs around US$26k, it is the 2nd most popular car in Australia, behind the Holden Commodore (A large RWD Sedan as well, which costs the same).
I may also put a nomination for the turbo diesel engine in a ST Tdci Mondeo.
A real rocket...

I'll be honest and say I really don't care whether ford every brings back a big V8. Unless they can improve the mileage I think we are in for smaller super charged or turbo charged cars and trucks. And of course diesel. I think will we even see the hemi go away or deturned from its current state.
None of todays truck lines can meet the coming CAFE standards. Things like hydaulic assist may allow us to hang on to our big engines a little longer.

BigF350, you just have to rub it in that we don't have those engines available. Thanks for the links. I was hoping you'd pop in and fill in the blanks. I get tired of people saying that Ford is incapable of a good V-8. They just won't bring them here to the US. I think that I-6 would be ideal in a Ranger.

Ford needs to get their heads out of the sand
What good are they to us If they are not here where the market is starving for V8 performance? They are not catering to the performance market and they are loosing business because of this. Americans want V8 power, and Ford brings nothing to the table but supercharged this and turbucharged that. Its a cheap way out IMO. They need to develop and engine and take advantage of it like Chrysler is. If Chrysler can do it so can Ford. It could verywell be Fords finacial state thats holding them back from doing the best they can. Personally If I were to buy a 150k GT-40 I want a decent engine under the hood. Not the same engine that buddy down the street has with the addition of a blower. Develop one, bring one from Australia, do something. The 5.4L Triton is weak now. It was good, but the competition is pulling away, and Ford is sitting idle at the wheel. I hope this Hurricane project isn't a waste of time and money. They need it badly. And if it is cancled for sure, Ford is going to be that much further behind. The 6.1 Hemi will be here this spring. Ford better have an answer for it, unless they want to remain where they are in the performance market. Just my .02.
Best as always.
