pinging when warm
Hello,
I have an 86, 150 4by4 302 EFI that runs fine until it hits normal op.temp., then it pings. I've checked the timing and even retarded it to 5 deg. BTDC. Same thing. Distributor is ok, new module and stator. Any thoughts?

Have you checked your spark plugs. they may be too hot for your application. try going with a cooler plug.

Yeah, replace all those vac lines over the manifold. You can use regular vac tubing, not that "coffee stirring straw" crap. Check the "coffee can" vac reservior behind the starting battery, it is likely rusted out.
Check for slack in your timing chain. Pull the fan, take off the distributor cap, put a big socket on the harmonic balancer bolt on the end of the crankshaft, and rock the crank back and forth. See if there's any slack between crank movement and rotor movement. That's timing chain slack and it messes with valve timing as well as ignition.

Thanks for the advice,
I found one cracked vac, "coffee stirrer" line and fixed it. Haven't had a chance to see if that's the problem. I suspect it might be vac leak, too. There's a bunch of those boogers under there! I hate these "new fangled doodads". Why I remember when Ford used vacuum to run the wipers, that sucked too. As for the timing chain, I replaced it a "little" while back, so I hope it ain't that. Had a reply about spark plug heat range, checked it and they're the right ones. Thanks again, JB

what plugs are you using. plain autolites copper plugs work the best. might also run some seafoam thru there, it will help break up any carbon in the combustion chamber that may be raising your compresion ratio an increasing the ping. are you sure the dizzy is set correctly as well. how many miles on motor?

Thanks for the reply. Plugs are regular autolite 24's. Motor has 100,000, but I have replaced the timing chain previously. I found & fixed a cracked vacuum line, that might be it but I haven't had time to check it out yet. There's a lot of vac lines and connections under there. What is "seafoam" and the "dizzy" setting? JB

seafoam cleans the carbon build up inside your motor and fuel system. great stuff.
figure on doing a tune up right after using it though. the dizzy is (distributor) meaning the timing should be set at 10*btdc. was that your first timing chain install??

I had a 302 problem with itpinging no matter`what the timing was set at. an old boy told me to make sure that no 7 and 8 plug wires are seperated from each other. If they are running side by side, they may cross fire. Sounded strange to me till I tried it. Have had no problems ever since.

I think you will find by checking your vacuum lines and fixing any cracked ones the pinging will stop. I had the same problem on my wiffs 96 Windstar until my brother in law replaced a vacuum hose. Problem is I can't remember which one it was.

Thanks again, I sort of figured dizzy might be dist. I had it at ten and with the pinging I tried setting it back to 5. As for the sea foam, I put in a bottle of carb /injector cleaner, and an oil change cleaner. I'll check at the parts store for the seafoam. As for the timing chain, I've "chainged" a few. I don't remember any going wrong, but I've killed a lot of brain cells since then.
