What do you think about this tire change?

I just bought the 2005 F150 screw Lariat and wanted to change the rims/tires so it looks more like a quasi-offroad truck, without the significant change to the ride. Here's the idea I was considering... tell me what you think...

Change from 18" Lariat rims down to 17".... and go with the BFG Rugged Trail T/A tires.

For the rims I was thinking the American Racing 17 x 8 Diamond Lock II.

http://www.americanracing.com/wheels/details.asp?wheelid=134&name=Diamond%20Lock%20II%2 0with%20Teflon®&style=118&desc=1-piece%20diamond%20cut%20alloy%20with%20Teflon%20fi nish&section=ORT

I got the idea on changing the tires/look from a buddy that just bought a new Toyota Tacoma TRD. The BFG Rugged Trail tires have a nice look. What do you guys think?

Or my second option is to keep the 18" rims that I have and get the 275/65 18 tires. again BFG Rugged Trail. This would definately be the cheapest of the two options.

Get the new rims & tires. You can get a bigger tire that way.

Right now there is amuch larger selection of 17" tires than 18". Get the 17" then create your gallery and lets see the pics.

The Rugged Trail tires are terrible! If you have not driven a vehicle with them you are in for a suprise. They were designed for origional equipment on some SUV's and pickups. They are NOT an off road tire in any way, they are designed to look a little "Rugged" but are intended for all on road driving.
They came on my F-150 and I have found them to be ok on dry roads, absolutely useless in snow, and worthless in any kind of offroad situation.
If you don't believe me just read some of the reviews of the tire at the Tire Rack web site. I would suggest putting BF All Terrain KO's 285 65 18's on your stock wheels. I tried to order them and they were on back order but should be available now. Talk about an agressive looking and driving tire!

I ordered 20inch Centerline Crossfire wheels with Nitto Terra Grapplers and they should be on this week.

Joetst2, Did the Goodyear AT's come on your truck? If so, they are a MUCH better tire than the Rugged Trail tires!

Let us know what you decide on. Good Luck

The BFG 265/60/16 Radial Long Trail Tires came stock on my truck. I live in Southern California so snow driving is not a concern and frankly I won't be doing much off-roading, I just want the look of the all terrain tires and still have a decent freeway drive. That's the reason I was thinking the BFG Rugged Trail tires might be a good choice.
