Engine removal

I do all my repairs myself, partly because Im cheap and partly because I dont necessarily believe that a garage can and will do a better job in all cases.
(been stung a few times)
Anyway, here is my question...
Anybody ever changed the motor in a 3.0 l Aerostar?
The Haynes manual I have says only the 4.0 l engine is removed out the front and that the rest of the motors have to be removed by raising the vehicle and taking the motor / tranny / suspension out the bottom. (which I cant do in my garage hence my comment at the top of the post)
If this is the case, what is so different about a 4.0 that makes the removal process so much different?
and secondly, is the manual even correct. in this regard?
I have found errors in the Haynes books before!!

Sorry I don't know about the 3.0 Aero, I have a 4.0 and mine did come out the front. I have not read up on the 3.0, but I don't see why it would be differant.

I did both the 4.0L and the 3.0L. They both came out in front the same way. No problem with the 3.0L. In fact, I think the 3.0L came out a little more easily.

You guys rock!!
Thanks for the info and the great pictures.
I was very pleased to see that the A/C system didnt have to be evacuated and recharged. (I live in Canada and I dont know if you can even do it by law?)
If and when I get around to it, I will let you know how it went.
The engine replacement is a last resort if I cant get rid of the lifter noise.
Seems like I have 1 collapsed lifter and if replaced as a set (as recomended) the cost would be around $400 when all is said and done.
I see rusted out Aeros in the local classified paper for $200 all the time, so it might be cheaper to buy one, replace the engine, strip off any other parts then drag it in for scrap. (which may even offset the cost 100%)
I plan to make another post for the lifter issue to see if anybody has some good ideas.
Thanks all.
