muffler problem

I had the muffler replaced about 4 months ago because the stock one rusted out at both ends (where the pipes enter and leave the muffler). Ever since I replaced the muffler, the thing has been louder. I have a few friends who have had the same problem with their mountaineers (99-2001)... once they replaced their mufflers, they are louder. Any ideas on how to make the thing quieter? Is there a second muffler or something that can be added to make it quiet again?

Did you replace just the muffler, or the muffler and everything in back of it. Most systems have a resonator as well that helps quiet the system. Some replacement systems bypass the resonator.
