Kerosene heater optional fuel
Does anyone know if you can use any other kind of fuel in a kerosene wick type heater, other than kerosene? I big supply of cleaning solvent, how is that in comparison? I know it says don't use any other type of fuel, but surely that is just a CYA type thing for them to say.
thanks!
thanks!

Zuik, that's not entirely true. Kerosene has been sold as #1 diesel since I was a young kid (about 6 or 7). I have owned and used many kero fueled heater over the years, so I know what you can burn. Look for the KEROSENE/#1 pump at the gas station. Many BP and MOBIL stations have them. It's right around $2 a gallon right now, the pumps also usually have a big sign that says "NO TAXABLE USE ONLY" on it.

That must be a northern US deal, we don't have any BP or Mobil stations around here. I have never seen anything but diesel on the pump, so I don't know what the difference would be. Oh well, thanks anyway fellas, I will just get it at the CO-OP for my $3 a gallon...Everyone have a Merry Christmas!!!

In many cases, #1 diesel can be used in place of kerosene
#1 is less refined than kerosene and may not burn as cleanly but usually works OK
automotive diesel is #2 diesel and is also referred to as furnace oil, it all comes out of the same tank.
#1 diesel is also known as stove oil and is not normally found at the pump
In some climates, #1 diesel is mixed with #2 diesel to create a "winter blend" automotive fuel.
I use stove oil (#1 diesel) in my torpedo style shop heater and it works very well, it does not work as well in my wick style heaters and I must use kerosene in those. Hope this helps. FSC
