Question Engine Question

I have a old 63 F250, and the 292 engine needs to be replaced. Should I get a 292 long block from autozone, or look for a more up to date engine. whats your thoughts on this?
This truck will be my primary transportation when its fixed.

Really depends on your long range plans for the truck. A 292 is a good all around engine, but lacks a little torque/hp. I would find a good machine shop before going to Autozone, but that is just me. 312 is right, if you go to a different/newer style block, you are in for a bit more work on fit. 351 or FE would be my choice unless you want to go ultimate torque/hp, then go 460.

Then again, I have heard many guys dropping mod motors in and running strong. Just really depends on your plans and depth of your pockets.

IMHO (glad I learned what that means:P), I always save the reman as a last resort. Now, I'm not sure how things are done now, but it used to be that a reman engine was essentially a repaired engine, meaning the company just replaced the parts that were bad. So if that means boring out cylinder #5 .030 over, #2 .040 over, #6 .010 over, and honing the rest, that's what happens. So often you see mismatched pistons, mismatched heads, etc, etc. Bottom line is have your original rebuilt unless one of the rods escaped or the bearings spun or the water jacket froze. And even if that was the case, your original engine wouldn't be returnable for the core, anyway, so you'd be out the core money. Just my $.02
