Exclamation Engine compartment fires

Hey all at FTE,

Recently i have read reports of unexplained fires in the engine compartment of 2000 models. These fires seem to have originated on the driver's side, happen while vehicle is parked, with key out.

I am very concerned. There are times when my dogs stay in the truck without me. It scares me to think of my truck burning up with my babies on board.

Have any of you experienced this????? If so was the cause found???

I've had my Expy for almost 4 years now and have been on this forum for even longer and had never once heard of anybody having this problem until a week or so ago when another poster asked a similar question and provided a link to a site where a few claimed their Expy spontaneously combusted. Try a search of the word "fire" for more details.

Yep those are some of the spontaneous combustion stories I read. I still have yet to hear somebody complain on this forum or several other Expy and/or F150 forums I've frequented.

If only 36 of several million vehicles have caught fire, I'd say the chance of mine or yours doing so is very remote, but tell that to the poor folks who've lost their trucks.

Thumbs up

Buzzard has a good point [about the board members not having this problem]. This is something i'll keep paying attention to but not a problem to be overly concerned about.

My 2000 expedition just caught fire in a store parking lot Dec. 24th 2004. After a lot of time on the internet, I now consider myself somewhat of an expert on the subject. If your cruise control stops working, TAKE THAT AS A WARNING, and disconnect the battery when you park, until you get the Speed Control Deactivation Switch replaced. As a matter of fact, (knowing what I do now) I think I would replace the SCDS now as a pre-emptive measure.

Question

Hey rvaughan,

"As a matter of fact, (knowing what I do now) I think I would replace the SCDS now as a pre-emptive measure."

How did you determine that this switch caused the fire??

Please tell us what you know about this switch. Is the original unit defective? What keeps the new switch from starting a fire?

My fire was put out quickly, and it's obvious from the burn pattern that the switch was the origination point. Here is some additional information.

Very interesting ..........

" ......... Apparently the cruise control deactivation switch is mounted on the end of the master cylinder in Ford automobiles. Over time as the operator steps on the brake, brake fluid leaks onto the contacts for the switch and causes a short leading to a fire."
