You need to get stiff wire like a hanger but maybe thinner and bend a small "U" at one end. This is your tool to try to depress a tab that is holding the **** onto the shaft. The tab is like a flat spring, once you depress it you release the tension. Fiddle around with the tool, trying to get the end behind the **** and into the space where the **** meets the shaft. All the while, pull gently on the ****, once you get it right it will come off.

I know this from this site. I tried to do it and couldn't, ended up prying it off and getting a replacement with a set screw. But once you see the set up, you immediately figure out how it works.

There is a notch in the **** stem on the back that will line up with where you want to be putting the pressure on the spring tab.

I have a punch that is "L" shaped that I use. As he said, once you have the tab pressed right, it slips right off. If you have to pull hard, you are probably missing it.
