Truck Rental to Compare

My plan is to purchase a truck next spring. My choices are F-150 4x2 Supercap Lariat, Nissan Titan or the Toyota Tundra. I have dealer demo tested the F-150 and the Tundra 4x2 Access Cab Limited. I want to rent the three trucks for a couple of days, but none of the major rental agencies have 1/2 ton trucks for rent. Any ideas out there? By the way, I lean toward the F-150 because so far the ride and comfort beats the Tundra (not by much though). Also reading the posts on FTE have influenced me too. I would appreciate any and all feedback.

Actually, I work for Avis rent a car, and there are something like 10 states where you can rent a truck. We lean more heavily to business/corporate rentals. We rent pickups in almost every Canadian city though. You may want to try Budget, or Alamo.

I did just what you were talking about for the last two weeks. I rented a 2003 F-150 Screw and drove ~800 miles in 1 1/2 days and it got 19.6 mpg. Last week I rent a 2004 Chevy 1500 and drove it ~600 mile in one day and got 17.5 mpg. Both trucks drove good but the chevy was too bouncy and didn't have as good of a ride. Both trucks seemed to bounce with 1000# of rice in the back though.

What auto rental company did you rent them from?

When my truck was in the shop getting a new rear bumper (got rear-ended), I made the rental co. get me (and the other's insurance co. pay for) a full-size truck. I told them it was my work truck, so I needed something similar. I ended up in a '03 Ram 1500 4x4 360 auto Quad Cab with less than 250 on the odometer. Certainly much better than my '90 F150. The company was Enterprise.

Enterprise all I have to do is ask for a truck and they will get one. This maybe because we do a lot of business with them.

Last week I rented (they gave me) a 2004 Dodge 1500 4X4 Hemi. Nice truck and it drove good at times. Sometimes I would be driving down the road and all of a sudden it would start to shake like crazy and them it would stop. I tried to speed up or slow down, change lanes but nothing would stop it. It done this a total of 3 times for about 5 minutes or longer and that was it. I drove ~700 mile and got 15.7 mpg.
