96 F150 Inline 6 Towing ability and Gears
Thanks for the 2 replies - I'm new to this forum and trying to figure it all out.
As far as the inside of the door - I found out the color code of the vehicle as well as the axle and Gross vehicle weight load - what would the code be for the axles and gears? Any new info on the 96 F150 Automatic 2 wheel drive Inline 6 would be great - thanks all!

Is that a Massey Tractor? - Send pics of the Inline 6 and what additions you have - weight distribution - breaks etc etc - I'm a newbie - thanks.

nope, allis chalmers wd, my pulling tractor, dont have any pics of the inline six, and the only aftermarket parts i have on my truck is two 10 inch subs behind the seat and better front brakes, also with my 10,000 pound load i didnt have any weight distributing hitch on it, just a regular one, but i loaded the trailer with just a smidge more weight in back than usual, i still had enough weight on the tongue to engage the overload spring so i had alot of tongue weight. also i would NOT RECOMEND towing that much, especially if your a newbie. i was just reassuring you that the 4.9 is capable of towing more than the f150 is rated for, i also dont RECOMEND going above the rated towing weight in the owners manual, though i have done it many times

Wow, the original post was 2004.
My F150 with the 4.9 and five speed was a decent towing rig. My main complaint is with the high first and reverse ratios, the other gears were well spaced. I did use overdrive but down shifted when engine vacuum dropped below 8" when I hauled a 3500 lb pop up. Hauling the 4500 lb fifth wheel Rv was pretty easy and I was able to maintain 55 to 45 mph speed limits on the back roads of southwestern Maine. Only used fifth going down hill above 12 " of vacuum with the bigger trailer.

Yes I do have the 308 Gears - Hmm so 5,600 is the max even though the hitch is rated for 8k with weight Distribution. I suppose most 24" trailers are not over 5Klbs anyway - that is why I sold my 87 Jeep Comanche for the higher towing ability of the Ford. I was hoping it would be rated for closer to 7K but 5,600 is fine and THANK YOU FOR FINDING THIS OUT FOR ME!!! Do you own a 96' as well? What State are you in? South Carolina is where I'm planning on moving to - I wanna learn farming.

Thanks guys, this has been an informative thread for me. I've been hauling my bracket car and trailer with a combined weight 5k lbs, 200 miles round trip to the track for years with my company vehicle, presently a 2012 Chevy Express van.
I will be retiring in the not too distant future and wondered if my '91 F150 with the 300 inch I6 and E4OD would be able to take over the towing duties. From what I'm reading here it sounds like it may be possible.

^^^ To answer your question, I wouldn't recommend getting too crazy with an E4OD. Theyre notoriously temperamental when it comes to towing & heat.
I was going to start my own thread but Ill just go off this one: Iv always been a fan of the 300, although Iv never owned one. The thought of good torque numbers and 20ish mpgs is enough to intrigue me!
I currently own a 2004 F-250 with the V10. Its a beast needless to say! But I cant get over 10 mpgs. Id like to go back to the old style trucks (80-97) and get a F-250, manual, with the 300 (did they come with ZFs?). Id be ok with swapping gears to something deeper, such as 3.73s or 4.10s if they didn't come that deep from the factory. I own a 5th wheel trailer weighing in at somewhere in the neighborhood of 8500 lbs. Would an ol 300 be up to the task? Other than pulling my camper a few times a year, that's pretty well all the towing I do

I don't plan on taking my camper on the interstate much, if at all. Most of the time, I take it 15 miles down the road.
If I cant find a 300 powered F-250, then I may do a swap. Actually, Iv wanted a reg cab F-350 dually with the 300, which of course was never made.
Will the 300 be able to retain 55-60 with my camper? My old IDIT would hold 55... if I kept my foot at exactly the point before it kicked down. If it kicked down, Id actually lose speed. I don't want that again lol
