'89 diesel engine problems
My fatherinlaw has an '89 Ford diesel pickup giving him a headache. It's hard to start, pukes great clouds of white smoke after eventual startup, and has low power. He has to plug the thing in if the ambient temp is below 15C/60F. Also, the dash gauge/light indicated it was overheating whenever he pulled a load, but when he lifted the hood it didn't seem to be unusually hot.
What the heck is going on, and how can it be fixed?

P.S. I'm mechanially able to deal with most auto problems; I just don't know much about diesels. Yet, anyway.

I would ask over in the diesel forum, I am a diesel newbie and have almost no Ford diesel experience.

Check for oil in the water and water in the oil. Check for blowby. Cleaning the injectors and doing a compression test will tell you a whole lot about a diesel.
