Why?

Does anyone know why Ford uses the 4.6 in the mustangs and not the 5.4? since the camaro's use the 5.7 i think the 5.4 would blow away the competion.

4.6 was first installed in the then new Town Car in 1991, then the then new 1992 GM & Crown Vic, then into the "new" Mustang in 1995 (a year late). 5.4 wasn't available when the current style Mustang was introduced (I know it was changed a little in 1999). 5.4 production is needed for the light truck/van market. Mustang sales where fine with the 4.6 and Ford didn't want to spend the money for engineering 2 V8s in the same car. The 5.4 available 1997 to 2001 would have still been spanked by the LT1 and LS1 powered TAs and Camaros.

i dont know why ford has not used a 5.4 in the stang. we know it would fit cause they put them in the cobra R and they also built a test car with the V10 in it. it would make sense to put in the 5.4.

Maybe someday we'll see 300+ cubic inches in the mustang again...someday ^_^. We can hope...

...I'd get one, if I had the money, and if I were 25 (lower insurance). Money won't be a problem in a few years...just the age part.

the 4.6 in a mustang and a 5.7 in a camaro where pretty close to the same HP and torque ratings where really close and the power they got out of the 4.6 between the truck engine and mustang engine was quite a bit. If they would do the same with the 5.4 no camaro would be able to beat it. Yes they did but a 5.4 in the cobra R so why cant they just take that engine minus the blower and change a few other parts?

Do the research, they had to completely redesign the engine bay to cram the 5.4 in the GTR, the relocated the shock towers, and reworked the inner fender wells. The problem is that the car was not designed to have a 5.4, it held it's own against the camaro, and firebird, with a smaller engine....

The real reason why is they don't have to. As long as the Mustang keeps selling well, and it is, no significant HP improvements will be coming to the mass produced models. When someone comes out with a higher HP car that outsells the Mustang, Ford might respond.
When it comes to Ford, it's ALL about the dollar!

Isn't the hurricane going to be primarily a truck engine to compete in the sport truck market?

6.2L is a big block now?! A 400 is 6.6 and that's not a big block...

My 390 is a big block and its not even a 6.6 liter
Anyways.... I've heard rumors, and read about a new 5.0 but its based off of a stroked 4.6... not the old style 5.0 that everyone knows

Yea, I guess by that rationale a 360, and even a 352, could be classified as 'big blocks'.

Does big block even apply to the milly-metric engines?
