OK..my dad is THINKING about running 2 stackes out the back of the tailbed...1 problem before i start is he recently got 2 toolboxes down each side of the bed...so should he put the pipe inside of them(would that look ok)..or where or what can he do....also is there a kit out there u can buy that has all nessesary pipe of will a shop get u the pipe and bend it when they put it on? and how much money we talking (chrome 5 inch pipe)
Just finished putting stacks on my 99 superduty. On the back of the cab below the window there are 2 indents about a foot or so in from the sides of the box. I centered my stacks (4" stainless) on those 2 marks. I think it looks great!! Running them straight no muffler. Sounds sweet to me! So i can't see why you can't do this on your dads truck. Get ahold of some abs pipe and use these to figure out were the stacks look best. I had to make my own system. If i can figure out how to post some pics i'll show you my setup. Good luck.
Hey Lance,
Thanks for the pics, I think that ure truck looks great.
I do have a couple more questions...does everyone have one pipe coming from the box then into a U shape pip to the stacks....my dad seems to think that one side might get more exhaust than the other...or should he just get true duals and stick 2 pipes out the box?
thanks again
Hey redbeast its lancer here. I built my setup this way because the fuel tank is in the way on the drivers side. You will have to run a y pipe right under the tank to get it to work. I don't think this is a good idea because the tank is plastic. Also the pipe would hang below the frame and stand out like a sore thumb. To answer your question about more exhaust couming out one side than the other don't notice that at all. The down pipe is just off center in the balance pipe. The exhaust hits the pipe and goes both ways 50-50. When i start the truck cold same amount of smoke out both stacks. Not more out of one or the other. Just make sure you leave lots if room between your tank and y pipe if you go that route. These pipes get very hot!! Good luck and post some pics when your done
Lancer, thanks man i think that is the info i needed to convince my dad to fix some stacks on his truck...and can u tell me how much trouble this caused you to install, and how much did it cost, and where did u get it(if bought off the net)...or what brand
...and hows the flex pipe working? will that last?
thanks again for all your help thus far
Way to go buddy! Hope all goes well. I live in Canada so are prices may very but here it goes. I bought a 10' chunk of 4" stainless pipe from a local exhaust shop. With taxes and shipping it cost $230. I used a chop saw to 45 the ends and about an hour with a buffing kit to make then shine. Than i bought a 10' chunk of 4" aluminized pipe to make the balance and down pipe for the system. I aslo bought a jointer with a 4" inside dia. on each end which i installed on each end of the balance pipe to accept the stacks. I fabbed my own mounting brackets out of some old angle iron and some muffler clamps. I made my sytem in my spare time but if you had all the stuff (welder, chop saw) you could do it in a day. As for the insall pretty easy. One 4 1/8" hole through floor of box (watch for crosser under floor of box!) a couple of 3/8 holes for brackets that hold the mounts for the balance pipe and thats basically it for up top. Down below cut the old system off hook up your flex pipe and enjoy! As for the flex pipe im not sure how long it will last. Im going to spray mine with some good quality aluminum header paint every once and a while. The salt here in the winter is hard on metal. But when i put the flex pipe on i only snugged up the muffler clamps. That way if it does go a new piece can be installed in no time. A small price to pay if you want stacks!! Anyway if you want i can make you some dia. of my system with angles and measurements if it will help, just let me know. Oh ya i have about $350 in my setup all together. Good luck on your quest!!
Wouldn't it be easy enough to go with a y pip in a different location than right under the gas tank? I don't have the chassis in front of me to look at, but I bet you could do it so as to not see the balance pipe (U) in the bed. That would make it look 100 times as mean. I did this on an old Ford F250, we y'd it under the box, and up in 2 stacks at the corners, looks mean, especailly in winter when you get the cold start.
Just go to ebay and theres a guy on there who has a store on there. his ebay name is chromeroom and he sells chrome stacks for dirt cheap. thats where im buyin mine.
