79 brake problem

I have a 79 f250 that runs and drives great except for one minor detail. I have what seems to be very little brake pedal. Its a 4 speed and the brake pedal is way lower than the clutch. The brakes work but they dont start to grab untill the pedal is about an inch off the floor, and that scares the crap out of me. I remember my very first pickup was a 78 f150 and it had the same problem. Is this "normal"? if not what can I do. I have brand new shoes and pads and I rebuilt the wheel cylenders and put new springs and such on the rear brakes and bled the heck out of brakes. I'm lost.
Thanks
Wayne

Theres an adjustment right behind the master cylinder that controls the amount of pedal travel. If the Master cylinder has ever been replaced, then that adjusting nut might be out of adjustment. Its pretty simple actually. Unbolt the two bolts holding on the master cylinder. Slide it forward and you will see a little ball looking thingie on the end of a rod. Screw it out and you will make your brake pedal higher. I forget the proper way to adjust it, because theres some sort of measurement for it. But just do it by feel. It shouldnt be adjusted out too far because your brakes will drag. The brakes should ingage after about 1/2 inch of pedal travel. Try to adjust to that point. Good luck
