Angry Windshield Wiper Problems

I own a 2000 Ford Explorer Limited Edition and have had numerous probelms over the past few years (horn broke, radio broker, air bag system broke, signal broke, smoke coming from steering column etc) - all have since been repaired however, I have had an ongoing issue with my windshield wipers. In heavy rain- they just stop. It takes a day or two for them to work again. The dealership has told me for 2 years that they can't fix the wipers unless they are not working by the time I get the car to them. They stopped on me a few weeks ago while I was driving my wife to the hospital in labor!

It's happening more and more frequently but can never get the car to the dealer in time to get it diagnosed and fixed.

Any suggestions- I am at my wits end!

The first thing I would do is put a little soapy water on the windshield for lubrication, and then with the wipers going, start wiggling wires around the wiper motor, especially near connectors. You may find something loose that is causing it. Mess around under the dash and steering column too.
