I just had some new Hooker headers put on my new 390. I bought header wrap for them but some people have told me that the headers will rust out faster if I wrap them and some people have told me that by wrapping the headers, I will lose horsepower. Anybody have thoughts on this? Thanks guys.
Rust out quicker: Yes, definitely. Using wrap will probably void your headers warranty (if it has one). The wrap traps moisture, as well as road salt etc, on the headers. Producing prime rusting conditions.
Lose performance: No. If anything I'd expect it to help performance. The wrap will keep heat in the headers, thereby reducing the temp of the engine bay. Cooler under the hood = cooler air going into motor = better performance.
If you want to reduce under hood temps, then get the headers ceramic coated.
Return the wrap. If you can't return it, use it to insulate your air inlet pipes (between air filter and intake, or the hose leading to the air filter -- that is, if you have one and it's plastic). Same general idea mentioned above. Insulate the air path into the engine to keep it cooler.
