Chassis

Guys I know the chassis on the older trucks are different widths between the 2wd and the 4X4, but don't know if it holds true today.

I need to know if Ford kept that idea going or do they share the same width measurements after 79.

Thanks for any info.

Come on Guys, someone here has to know if the 4X4 chassis are the same width as 2wd and I'll be year specific 88. I know that up to 79 they were different.

I bought a 88 swb F150 4X4 and need a lwb, I am wondering if I can buy a 2wd lwb truck and use the 4x4 axles under it.

Yeah I think so. I am pretty sure that from 77 up, they used the same widths. At least for the f150s. And the ttb years, they should be identical. There have been a few 4x4 swaps done using a 2wd frame, and 4wd ttb stuff. I used to have a favorite where a guy did this, and it turned out sweet. If you have a lineup on a good 2wd frame, you should be fine. Ted

The only 4x4 frames that are different sizes that I know of are the older "highboy" F-250s, 1973-1979, otherwise they should be the same.

Thanks guys, it was 80 that Ford changed a lot on the pickups, and I have never owned one that new. The front half of the chassis are the same from 65 to 79 and Ford used a narrower chassis for 4X4s during that time period.

I built my 66 for cruising and not for pulling. The 88 4X4 came up on a DWI auction, and has most of what I need for pulling my trailer. The 88 body has driver side damage and is a swb. I have another 66 lwb disassembled. I am kicking around the idea of building that sheetmetal on a 4X4 frame, but I'll need a longer chassis.

thanks for the feedback
