Engine Size

I have (Dads) a 1965 F-350 Truck with a homemade steel deck. It has a 6 cyl in it, but I can't tell if it's a 300 CI or a 240 CI can anyone help me where to find engine size stamped on it? Thank you, Baconneggs

It is not stamped on it. The easiest way to tell a 240 from a 300 is to loosen all the plugs, remove the coil wire (for safety), remove plug #1, and slowly rotate the engine via the harmonic balancer bolt. Put a straw or soft piece of copper down the cylinder . Try to keep the measureing stick on the same place on the piston head. Now make a mark at the bottom, using some fixed point of reference, Make another at the top, from the same point.

240 approx. 3.25" -- 300 approx 4.00" If in between, you slipped in the cup of the piston and you have a 240. If over 4, you probably have a 300.

Other ways are pulling the oil pan to look at the crank numbers (different crank, rods and pistons, as well smaller chambers on the heads are the only differences between 240 and 300). Or the head numbers, which are impossible to read except with a dental mirror. They are under the front edge of the head, behind the t-stat housing. I tried this approach with a mirror and found it to be impossible.

Do a search here or over at fordsix.com if you need the numbers for the crank or heads. I forget them always.

If the truck has the original driver side door, you can post the VIN number and we can tell from that. You will probably see F35x, where "x" is the engine code for these trucks....

The 4th character is the engine code for 65's.

J = 240
B = 300
D = 352
