octane question

just did a search and really learned my lesson about running too high of an octane in my truck. im running 91(highest you can get in vegas) the guys who rebuilt my engine told me to run premium but they knew my carb was pretty run down. now ive got a new carb and still am running premium. my question is how much excess carbon buildup is there on my pistons etc. and how do i get rid of it? ive been running 91 for about 5000 miles. my setup is 400, motorcraft 2150 carb and the rebuild was stock,(just moly rings and such) no cam upgrades or anything. i want to run 87 but want to make sure compression is compatible. i sure hope i havent damaged my new baby(only 5000 miles on this engine) thanks

Higher octane won't hurt your engine. It doesn't cause any excess carbon build-up. The only thing it hurts is your wallet.

Few people really understand what octane is. Other than a hydrocarbon molecule with 8 carbon atoms, octane "number" refers to the ability of the fuel's end-stage gases to resist spontaneous auto-ignition. High octane fuel doesn't burn any slower than low octane fuel.

Besides lightening your wallet it will reduce your mileage and your engine power output, a double -er- triple whammy.
