1988 F-250 Oil pressure & Temperature Problems
We have a Ford F-250 with a Fuel saving 460 . We're having problems with the oil pressure going fom low to high to normal then low then high repeatedly. Then the "Check Engine" light comes on. Also, the temperature gauge is in the "Normal" range but sits on the L or just a little after it. We changed the thermostat once, about 5 or 6k miles later we were driving down the interstate with no load and it overheated. We had the thermostat changed out and changed the oil. Since that time we experienced the oil pressure problem.
The garage said they tested the radiator, said it was fine. Did and oil pressure test said that was fine. They replaced the sending unit. The oil doesn't fluctuate as bad as it did, but still does. The garage said they also checked the head gasket and they were fine. But, does it sound like the head gaskets need replacing?
We want to use this truck to pull or 28ft fifth wheel, but don't dare to. Does anyone have any thoughts or suggestions?
TIA,
Jodie

Is the oil milky like it has water in it? If not chances are the head gaskets are fine. I am not to familiar with the big blocks but if you can get a mechanical oil pressure guage from the auto parts store and find a place to plug it into the motor this will tell you if your guage might be bad or if you might have a bad wire from your sending unit to your guage.

did the truck come with a oil cooler? if your going to pull put one in and change the oil pump to a high presure pump to help it travers the longer distanse. change the oil filter lately? sometimes they fall aparts inside. trany can cause the engine to drop in temp and oil perssure. check all of the spark plug for signs of rusty gummy build up this is a good indicator that the head gasket split and antifreeze is getting in the top of the piston, it will blow by on the exaust stroke not for long before the engine goes....
Yep bye a new Diesel truck,, and come on up here to Saskatchewan Canada and i'll take you fishen it will be cheaper than fixen that old thing again and again...ain't nothen worse than a familly screamin at you on the side of the highway,, as to why the truck broke down, on your holidays. lol lol
