Question Problems-- again 390

I ran out of gas yesterday and coasted down the hill and parked on the side of the road. There was a sort of hissing sound as I parked. I figured it was the fuel pump or the holley carb.
I went to go get gas, it was late when i got back, tried to get it started again, starting fluid, putting a little gas in the carb through the sight hole, etc. It won't keep going, it shakes real bad after it starts then dies.

I know that the tranny has a slow leak, and there have been some compression problems. Could either of these things cause the engine to quit like this?
I am wondering if it could be dirt in the fuel line etc, or a major internal problem.
Mechanical fuel pumps suck.... I wish i had the dough to go electric. Hate it when you run out of gas and you can't get it going again because the engine needs to run to get gas.

Top it all off and some damn kids broke my driver side window last night bah!

if it shakes real bad, it sounds like maybe its not running on all 8 cylinders, id check to make sure theres noplugs fouled and the timeing is set right, about 10 TBDC.

Could be

Could be there's not enough gas in the tank for the pump to prime. Even if you dump 5 gallons in, it can take a few tries to get gas to the carb.
Look at the simple things first:
Is there coolant in the radiator? (overheating/compression)
Is there spark at the plug? (ignition)
Is there gas at the carb? (fuel) This one's risky, ground the coil wire to the block, disconnect the fuel line and crank the motor. You should have some pretty healthy squirts.

I hear hissing every time I shut off my '74, it's the vacuum controls behind the dash leaking down.
keep us posted.

I am begining to think the fuel pump went out or is clogged, I have primed the carb a few times and it doesn't seem to be replentishing the gas.

Also the #4 spark plug was fouled a bit with oil. A bad ring wouldn't stop the engine from running would it? and if the head gasket on that side was blown wouldn't all the plugs be fouled bad?

I have yet to drain the oil, i hate to do it cause its all new oil and would like to get somemore miles out of it.

There is a sort of shudder that happens when I turn it over now. Tranny or engine I can't really tell which it is.

I got a tranny filter kit, was thinking of doing that, maybe that would tell me whats goin on in there.

A bad ring won't stop the motor.
If the oil level is mysteriously high, drain it. Otherwise, pull the dipstick and look for water in the oil; kind of milky looking. Look for oil in the radiator; globs of milky looking stuff. The two fluids mixing is one sign of a blown gasket, oil and water everywhere under the hood is another.
If your tranny isn't making a godawful rackett, don't worry yet.
I couldn't even guess about the shudder.
When you crank the motor, does it sound consistant, or does the sound fluctuate?

The sound fluctuates a bit. Used to purr, but now it doesn't. Gotta give it a lot of gas to keep it going then it dies, and runs out of gas.
BTW I pulled the valve covers off and everything looks ok in there. no bent rods or anything.

One thing that happenned a few weeks ago.. the engine got out of time (not running on all cylanders) on the freeway after I was going 60 or so for a long time. I let it cool down for a bit checked all the fluids, fluids were fine. I started it up again about an hour later and it was rough for a bit, but then it worked itself back to runnin fine again.

I was thinking the vacuum advance might not be working right, or I'm timed wrong.

well today its bright and sunny so i spent some time working on the truck. I decided to try to lower the oil level a bit and also put gas in the secondary tank incase the first tank is clogged.

It worked. Runs fine though there is a little squeel still at low rpm. I think that is the valve covers. I need to go get some new gaskets, since I messed them up when I checked underneath.
