Unknown object

I was putting on new shocks today and I noticed a cylindrical object a little over a foot long and about 6 in in diameter mounted directly over the spare tire. It has an electrical connection (or solonoid?) on the drivers side. It also has a fuel line that ties into a "Y" connector with another line from the fuel tank.

I thought it was the fuel pump at first, but that's supposed to be in the tank.

I've checked my maintenance/repair manuals and can't find what it is. Anybody know?

Sounds like a filter canister for the fuel tank fumes...

hmm... just went out and looked under my 91, and I dont have one. Not sure what it could be, does it say anything at all on it? Perhaps it's something that a previous owner put on (or are you the first owner)?

I have the same thing on my 98. I have to agree with Dave257. Pretty sure it's the charcoal canister for the fuel tank fumes.

Yep, part of the EVAP system. The older trucks have them under the hood.
