I Have a 77 Highboy w/ the Dana 60 rear end. I am having a big problem in the fact that it wont guit leaking! It seems to throw the oil out of the pinnion seal, it throws gear oil all over my shocks and the underside of my truck. I have replaced the seal about 3 times now and it still wont quit! If the vent hole on the rear end is plugged could that be blowing the seals? Or is the problem coming from my T-case? Any advise would be great.........Thanks!
I think you're on track with the vent hose. Check it to make sure it's clear. When the dif warms up and expands, that pressure needs to go somewhere. If the vent is clogged, the seals are the next weakest link.
Also, make sure you have the right seal. Slide it onto the yoke while it's apart and make sure it seals.
Also, check the yoke for worn grooves where the seal rides. My t-case yoke was worn like that. Some seals have a spring around the rubber part to keep them tight to the yoke. When the rubber wears out and breaks off, the spring can ride right on the yoke and groove it out.
Worn pinion bearings can also cause the yoke to wobble in the seal and wreck 'em.
77,
A leaky pinion seal is a warning that hthe pinion bearing is not adjusted correctly. have you checked your end play. How far will the flange move in and out of the pinion bearing housing? Should be much more than .005 ". How are you tightening the flange back on after the seal replacement? How much rear end experience do you have? What's the backlash adjustment at, approximately?
PS. Of course, check the vent line. A clogged vent line could cause the axle seals to leak as well. Check your breaks for lube.
Good Luck,
