Backfiring

Any suggestions? I have a 1951 Ford P/U with original flathead. When you let off the gas the it backfires. Tried adjusting the timing-didn't work.

I don't know but i can give suggestions.........
Backfires out the carb or out the tailpipe ?

carb settings should be checked, maybe too lean
all timing checked......point gap, advance working ?, plug gaps
compression of each cylinder.
Keep us informed.

Andy- I had this pbm on an old VW Beetle years back. Mixture was too lean. Adjusted carb to make it right and pbm was gone. tp

Thumbs up

I have this problem with my 50 F-1. It is the points. They close so often and that is what causes the backfire. I have been told an electronic ignition will solve this problem.

I also vote for the points being the problem. Did you solve the problem? John

John. I have not yet financed a electronic ignition. I will be getting the truck re-wired. So I am saving up for that. Will let you know about it when I do it.

Kevin-I'm not sure what you mean by the points closing so often. If you haven't already tried putting in new points and adjusting the dwell, it's worth a try before going to expense of a new ignition system. Terry

I believe I had new points put in about a year ago. The backfiring was gone for awhile and now it is back, but only when the motor is cold. Also I have this diamond plated back bumper with matching side plates that the tail lights are incorporated into. Was this a factory ad or after market?
