Picked up a great running 77 F150 SWB 4X4 for a great price. Just got a good look at the body through the fence and the guy that had it guaranteed it to be mechanically perfect. Got it home and no disappointments till I crawled under it and noticed the C6 had a small block bellhousing on it! Pop the hood and sure nuff, it ain't no M block or Cleveland in there. Little too late in the day to really see under the hood for details tonight so I thought I would prod the minds out there for some details to look for in the morning when it's light out. What clues should I be looking for to tell the difference between the 351W and the 302?
Cool! or Crap! Whichever applies. Definitely got a 351W or a 302. Now I just gotta figure out which one. Thanks for the tip Torque1st. Been a while since I read all those stickys. Sorry 'bout that one slipping my mind. Man, I was hoping for a M block!
Since the 351 has a longer stroke than the 302 the cylinder block deck height is about 1" taller. Take a look at the front of the engine above the water pump, if the deck height is nearly the same height as the water pump then it's a 302, but if there is about an inch of "extra" block between the water pump and deck height it's a 351. This also makes the intake manifold a little bit wider than the 302 intake. Hope this helps!!
Thanks folks! It took every bit of thirty seconds to figure out I have a 351W under the hood this morning when I raised the hood. I couldn't have done it without all the tips from you guys. I appreciate it and hope I can return the assistance one day
