Bedside or patch panel?

I have the usual rear fender rust, thanks ford!, and was wondering, being a beginner should I go with a patch panel or just replace the entire bedside? I guess I should ask, does the bedside attach using spot welds only, or is it a bit more involved on the lower/ underside? I figure spots welds would be easier for me to get started as opposed to fixing warped sheetmetal installing a patch panel, which I am sure will occur.

I also noticed there is a metal inner piece on the rear fender (connects to the fender lip), it has been eaten up with rust as well, would anyone have the name of this piece, so I will know what to get?

What about suppliers of patch panels and body parts, do any stand out quality and price wise? My only known source is jcwhitney or acme. Any thoughts appreciated

A picture would help.

I don't have a digital camera, I may take pic and have them converted, but it would probably be hard to point it out, as right now it looks pretty good. I slapped bondo in the hole about 2 years ago shaped it and painted it, I didn't even treat the rust, I just wanted to see how bondo filler works, looks pretty good, but its starting to bubble so I figured this time I will actually fix it. If you can picture the rear fender, from the center imagine about an inch above the fender opening, with the contour of the fender to the left and right, you could stick your hand into the hole and move it to either side. The rust from what I can tell is limited to this area, I just didn't know if it would be easier to do the entire side or just a patch panel? If I am making no sense I will wait and get a camera.
