Best pulling truck I ever had was a 66 IH scout with a 152 4 banger (actually 1/2 of the 304 V8). It wouldn't get out of it's own way, but it would climb the side of a building. I had 10.50 mudders on it, and it would just putt thru whatever you felt like driving thru or across. I snapped a rear half shaft pulling a 28 foot sportfisherman on a triple axle homemade trailer up a concrete boat ramp, and brought it out on the front end. Sorry I ever sold the rusty, leaking, noisy, cold tin can.

The best pulling truck I can remember was what a friend of mine
had. It was a 1972 Ford F-250 4x4 highboy with a 390 motor.
He entered many truck pulls with this truck. He lost very few pulls.Won most of them. He went up against many Dodges and Chevy's with their all there high powered motors. That 390 was
a torque monster. Just when you thought that truck was done pulling it would go another 20ft. He pulled this truck many years and never had no trouble with it. Transmission and motor were really tough in that truck. That 390 will always be my favorite Ford motor. The durability of that motor and the power output was hard to beat. That truck really defined the saying Built Ford Tough.

Friend of mine had a 1995 Chevy 2500 4x4 with the 6.5. He had a holset turbo jerry rigged on it and had played around with some screws in the fuel pump. not a raw dog by any means, but pretty good for a 6.5. He gets to runnin his mouth about this guy from another town who drives a 250 Crew Cab PSD 4x4. To make a long story short, the guy asks my friend if he wants to hook. not to look stupid, he agrees and its on!!! they hooked in a feild not far out of town. my friend gave it all he had, reamin it every gear, but neither truck moved. content with himself, he went up to the ford driver smilin. the guy simply smiled back and said "would u please lock in my hubs" My friend did as requested and they gave it another shot. i dont know what was funnier, seeing a streak of chevy blue zip by or the look on his face when the big ford stopped. either way, it was a classic.

My '74 Highboy was owned by my brother from brand new. With the stock 360, he pulled all sorts of people out of sand, mud, snow, you name it. Even pulled a semi out of a snow bank, but lost the shorty driveshaft u-joint between the tranny and transfer case (NP205). He had spares, fixed it, and then pulled the semi out in 4x4 low with all four wheels hopping on clear pavement.
I did up a hot 390 for it, and it goes anywhere... actually, it has LESS traction now, the 390 just spins the wheels no matter what - that 360 had a lot of torque but didn't rev as much.
Anyway... I can't wait until my '01 SD is off lease, and I own it - then we'll see what it does
