Engine Running Poorly

Hello All,

I have a 1983 F150 302 5.0L 4x4 that I bought for $1000.00 as a plow truck. Yes it did come with a 7 1/2 foot Fisher plow. I think that I got a pretty good deal. It needs some body work hence my previous posts. I am also noticing that the engine does not want to stay running when I try to start it and leave it running. When I take the air cleaner cover off it runs perfect and purs like a kitten. I know that the previously owners have messed with the emmisions controls and I think there is quite a bit of stuff missing. Is this year and model supposed to have a cat? If somebody has this same setup could they take close up pictures of their engines and send them to me. This would give me an idea on where to start. I just bought the Haynes Repair Manual for this and I'm educating myself on this engine.

Thanks

I'm in kinda the same boat with the 85 f250 I just bought. Pd 850.00 with a 7 1/2 plow. Needs major body work. Way too much emisson stuff on there, and yes you should have a cat on there. Check in the air box or somewhere around there, Ford used to put some kind of Air Chrarge Temp sensor in those. That MIGHT be the problem, although I'm not really sure. Especially since you said that when you took the air cleaner off, it ran better. My hunch tells me the problem is somewhere in the air intake system. Kinda tough with the older trucks like ours to diagnose these problems. Good Luck!
