Question Slight delay when accelerating

I just noticed a problem with my 94 Ford Bronco. When I come to a complete stop in the vehicle. I accelerate slowy, while the engine speed is coming up, there is no wheel movement, then there is a clunk (no noise, but like shifting from neutral to drive at 900 rpm's.) quickly followed to power to the wheels. However, this does not happen when I smash the hell out the accelerator. And I have no other problems with the tranny.

Can't find info on this problem, and all the transmission shops say I need a new tranny. I was also told that the tranny in my Bronco is the same as a the tranny's in the 1 ton pickups? Is this true?

Appreciate the abundant info you guys put up.

I’m having the same problem with my 93 Bronco, I found that with the rear drive shaft disconnected I can turn the pinion three to four inches before it catches with the ring gear. I took everything out of the differential today and didn’t find anything worn out or broken. I’m trying to find out if the ring gear backlash is adjustable on the 8.8 rear end, if it is then that is what I’m going to try. I’ll let you know if it works. Good luck!

It could be the pinion itself correct?

It could also be the transmission. I had a similiar problem where I would accelerate and get nothing for 1-2 seconds and then I would start going, turned out to be the transmission needing a rebuild.

I had similar problem with mine. It turned out to be the Universal Joints on the drive shaft were bad. The clunk you hear is the the drive shaft engaging once it takes up the play in the joints.

I have replaced the the U-Joints, but the same thing is happening. I hope it is not the tranny, nor the rear-end. I appreciate the responses great info

gonzo, your bronco has an E4OD tranny which is controled by the computer. there is a solenoid located on the side called an mlps solenoid. ford sells them for 80bucks and should cure your problem. When was the last time you serviced your tranny, also how is the fluid level and smell. if it smells like rotten eggs you have a problem.

hey i think i have the u-joint blues... how hard is this to do? my tranny place that i bring my truck to wanted $300 for it (front and back)

I think I only need the rear ones replaced... My skills are moderate I think. I recently replace my alternater by myself - just for reference for my mechanical skills (I know its not a big deal to the people on this forum, but it was pain in the butt to get those bolts removed)

Anyway my truck is a '94 XLT 5.8

So my questions are...

1. Can this be done by a bonehead like me
2. Where can I get the parts (Kragen or NAPA or is this something that I shouldn't cheeze out on and definately go to Ford?)
3. Do I need air tools to do this
4. Do I need to lift the truck to do this?

Thx in advance.

go to napa, get ujoints with zirk fittings so you can grease them. you will need basic tools and a vice . by yourself a haynes manual it will give you step by step instructions on replacing ujoints. best book you could ever buy for your rig. will save you loads of cash down the road.

kemincal - thanks for the info.

Do you think I should do both front and back? Also do I need to lift the truck on stands to do this, or can I crawl down there?

I have changed the filter and had it serviced. Before the service I did smell and check the oil, like Kemicalburns suggested, everything checked o-kay. Though Kemical, did suggested replacing the solenoid. I am going to try that this weekend I am also waiting on Errgo to see what his outcome is when he adjusts the backlash.
