Front end problem

I have a '94 AWD, and the problem is, the steering wheel jerks to the left serveral times in a row and then settles down. This has happened to me a couple of times now and felt like the front wheel was going to come off. The last time it happened I pulled over and had to turn a corner and there was a series of cracks from the front. I have since pulled the wheel and checked tie rod, wheel tightness and brakes. The CV joints have not given me any reason to think that they are worn. By that I mean no noise. The boots have a crack in it but it doesn't seem to go completely through. In the past I have had a serious vibration when braking from a highway trip, not sure if this is related or not. THis doesn't happen all the time and I cannot make it do this. Both times it happened I had just come off the freeway.

You could have a problem with the rack and pinion steering unit, the inner tie rod ends, the upper bushings, the upper and/or lower ball joints, etc.

Or it could be a problem with your tires or wheels. I recently had a major problem with my tires (less than a year old) where every once-in-a-while I would experience a similar jerkiness to the steering slowing down from freeway driving and turning to the right. Took tires back to Discount Tire where they replaced them all due to a recall on that brand. Why they didn't contact me when they received the recall, I don't know, but they didn't.

First I would check all tires and wheels. Then get a manual and check the steering and suspension items I listed above. Do it soon, because driving with this kind of an intermittent problem could prove disasterous.
