Yet another starter problem

Good morning,

I have a 1992 Ford F-150 with a 300. The starter has been turning slow even in warm weather. Now the starter has developed a new intermitent problem. Sometimes the starter will turn over once and stop, and then take off after about a second or so. It doesn't matter if its warm or cold. Sounds like the starter but I don't want to buy a starter if this isn't the trouble. The charging system seems okay because I run a snowplow on this truck and never have a problem.

I wonder if a starter would fit off an 86 with a 300 as I have on in the garage. In my opinion they were a better starter, had more power, and were cheaper to fix. What's everyone's thoughts?

Just buy a good high quality starter( Not Pep boys), yours is shot. They last for years, 100,000 miles worth of starts isn't hard to come by. My 1992 4.9L is on it's second starter, the original died at 130,000miles. They are easy to change and there is really no reason not to stick with the stock set up, it is actually durable enuf to do the job. Unlike the piece of junk alternators Ford used in 1992.

My starter went out slowly also, sometimes I would have to bang on it with a 2x4 plank, a rock, a wrench to get it to crank, then it just died altogether one day. There isn't too much that can go wrong , they either crank or don't.

I have to agree with our esteemed colleague. Starters do not go all at once commonly. It sounds like the main armature assembly is going south. Many think that when starters go bad, it is the more common problem when the Bendix drive goes and the starter will not engage the flywheel.

I also agree on being picky where you buy a replacement. I have had good luck with replacement electrical parts from Auto Zone. With a lifetime guarantee (make sure you keep the receipt somewhere safe) you cannot go wrong and they never give anyone a hassle about backing the warranty up. I also recommend NAPA for a second choice. I buy and sell classic and collector Ford vehicle parts (side business) and have found new NAPA parts for customers along with what I've bought for my cars and trucks and never had a problem with any of them ever.
