New Engine Fun
Just wanted to say a bit of thanks to this forum for help with the many questions with my 390 build. I swapped the tired 390 out and the new one in and have been enjoying the heck out of the results for the past 2 days. I thought I would share what went into my engine here and the results for anyone wanting a very very great running 390 for not too much cash. All in all I have under $3000 in the whole engine replacement including new hedman hedders, DUI and new carb. Components:
Early reinforced main web block, line honed, torque plate honed
D2TE heads Stock size stainless valves, bowl hogged, bronze guides, crane springs, oil mods, rebuilt stock rockers, Crane 901 cam, hypereutectic 2V pistons, rebuilt rods, arp bolts, HV oil pump, arp shaft, D.U.I. distributor, performer intake, 600 edelbrock carb, 1" spacer, balanced including pressure plate, centerforce D.F. clutch, windage tray, MSD heli-core wires and a thermal clutch fan. Machine work by Gray's Automotive Tigard, OR.
So far, I'm running it a little rich and believe the D.U.I. distributor curve job is rediculously conservative at 20 degrees total time, but this sucker flat out gets it. I can broil 35's through 3rd with 4.10's. I've gotten 12 MPG so far with rodding it a few times and pushing through 6"s of snow today. I've been told these FE engines take 3-4000 miles to fully break in and develop full power. Can't wait to put some more miles on it. It now drives like a new truck. Truly a joy to drive. Thanks for all the help!
