Brake adjustment

What is a good way to adjust brakes on my 49 F1? When did they start using auto adjusters?

This is a great question and its been awhile since anyone has asked. I am eager to read about how others are adjusting non self adjusting drum brakes.

Auto adjusters

1962 Fords had the first self adjusters if my memory is correct. I found that turning the adjuster wheel to the point that the wheel is locked and then backing off 10 clicks usually sets the primary adjustment. This works for non self adjusting brakes also.
Non self adjusting brakes requires the brake spoon to be pried up and self adjusting brakes require the spoon to pry down to tighten the brakes to lock up.
I will never forget the first time I replaced brakes on a Ford with self adjusters. I first thought that I would never be able to put them back together. The old mechanic at my Dad’s shop bailed me out, again.

Part II Chapter IV of the ubiquitous shop manual is dedicated to the brake systems and contains the process for adjusting the brakes.

what I do on any new drum brake install is adjust them down to where the tire turns hard by hand then back off until I can just hear the shoe scrape the drum when rotated.

when later re adjusting I just tighten until I hear a scrape of the shoe on the drum
