Trans conversion

I'm converting 84 F150 from auto trans to stick. 83 clutch has Mechanical linkage. 84 has hydraulic clutch. Does anybody know if 83 bell housing is same as 84?

Probably not, the auto's had different bolt patterns where they mated to the trannies.

I take it you are asking if an 83 manual bellhousing is the same as an 84 manual bellhousing?

They are not the same, A bellhousing with a hydralic clutch, has a mounting boss for the hydraulic slave cylinder (88 up used a internal slave). If you are going to stick with the hydraulic clutch (a good idea in my opinion) get the appropiate bellhousing.

I ran into this same situation myself when swapping from the Mazda 5spd to a 4 speed overdrive. The bellhousing for the hydraulic has a bracket for the slave cylinder cast into the side of it. I couldn't find a used one anywhere, although the Ford dealer had a new one on the shelf for $211. I purchased the proper clutch fork and hydraulic line from the dealer for less than $50, a slave cylinder from autozone and fabricated my own bracket. Works good, but I wouldn't recommend it unless you have access to some proper tools (torch, welder, milling machine). Do a search at the junkyards and you might get lucky.

I am glad to see that I am not the only one who thinks a hydraulic clutch is a good thing.

I have had three trucks with the hydraulic clutch (All external slave) and they were great.

You see so many guys saying the hydraulic clutch is bad and have so many problems - of the three trucks I have a total of about 200K trouble free miles.
