Question Engine probs

Well, I am the proud owner of a high milage 86 Aero with the 2.8L 2bl carb. Transmission was spitting the fluid out of the vent, so I had it rebuilt. About a week after it wouldn't shift out of 1st for about 2 blks, then fine since. But now the engine runs rough randomly, and when it does, I can hear relays clicking like crazy under the dash. Any ideas? I am going to replace the TPS because sometimes it feels like I am downshifting from OD at 65-70mph. And also at times seems like the timing is way off then gets better. I feel like I am about to chase a ghost, because there seems to be many sensors that can effect shifting and timing, but I want to narrow the problem down before my transmission warranty is up.

Have you pulled the trouble codes? If the TPS is bad it will give you a code.

When you plug in a code scanner & do a "key on engine off test" the first thing it does is a self test of all sensors & circuits. The next thing it does is to look at "continuous memory codes" If a sensor has failed anytime in the last 40 times that the engine has been run it will store a code. For my 2 Fords I have an Actron CP9015 code scanner. It was 35 bucks at Autozone. The instruction manual that came with it is worth the money by itself. If you dont want to buy the scanner, see if Autozone will pull the codes then list them here in the order that they come up.
