As you can see i'm a new babie to this forum but I've been on for a while just reading but I had to register now because I have a Big Problem.

O.k here we go. I have a 89 Bronco Full Size 5.0. The problem is that the truck doesn't want to start at all. I've searched through the forum and I haven't found a solution to my problem.

When you turn the key the truck acts like it is dead. The lights come on on the dash and the battery gauge moves but nothing.

It has a new battery, starter relay, starter, clutch switch, and ignition switch. I've changed all of these thinking this would be the problem, but no. Everytime you turn the key nothing. THe starter relay doesn't even click.

I've been reading on this forum and before I change the ignition module or the coil I was wondering if anybody else went through this problem or if anybody has any suggestions????

Oh yeah the main thing is that I can start the truck if I jump the starter relay. But if I turn the key nothing. Does anybody know what I'm bypassing when I jump the relay??

Sorry so long but I have no more hair to pull and I'm getting really upset. If I didn't love this truck I would of burned it already.

You bypass everything by jumping it at the solenoid. You may want to get a skematic to see which way it runs but it should run from the igniton switch to the clutch switch to the sol. check for power at these points.

 

It isnt uncommon for you to get a bad part here and there. Exchange the relay for another to see if that helps. if it starts by jumping it, then to me, that says the relay, (solenoid), isnt closing correctly to allow power to the starter. Also check your connections to make sure that when the ignition switch is turned to the start position, it gives power to the relay to close the connection. You should have 4 wires to the solenoid. 2 large, (From battery and to the starter), and 2 little ones.

Take the low voltage wire (the one that brings juice from the key switch) off and hook a meter to it, then turn the key to start. If there’s no juice, then the problem is the starter key switch, the clutch or park position switch (if you have one) or a break in the wiring somewhere.

You can pull out the schematic wiring diagrams and start looking; or another approach would be to just buy a push button starter switch and run a new wire to the solenoid. You could get juice from the battery directly or fish around under the dash and find juice off the key switch, so the starter button would only work when the key was on. You might want to include an in-line fuse wherever you get juice from, especially if you get it straight from the battery.

 

maybe the ignition switch, check power from switch to relay. as stated above

Chuck I thought about the same thing ( starter switch ). It seems so much easier if I just put that in.

Have you thought to check the NEUTRAL SAFTEY SWITCH? if its bad it wont start. good luck DW

 

I would bet money you reversed wires when you replaced the starter relay, that is why it will start when you jam a screwdriver in there.
