Fuel gauge went to empty though full

Wife and I got in the Excursion Thursday to run some errands. I noticed at the first stop it was showing just above 3/4 tank which was odd given I just filled it up and only had 37 miles on the tank. Started it up and off to the next stop I looked for fuel on the ground and saw none. When we get to the next stop the gauge had moved further down closer to E. Come out of second stop and crank up to venture to our third spot and notice the gauge is on E with the low fuel light on. I also noticed the SES light was on when I initially started and backed out of the garage so I know there's a code or two thrown, but I haven't looked into it yet. I've researched it here and haven't come up with anything given most often it's the gauge getting stuck in the full position. I replaced the sending unit fuel pickup assembly a couple years back and had to go back in early last year because it was stuck on full which wound up being the plastic resistor mechanism the float arm end sweeps on to register tank level. I had an extra tank out of an Excursion gasser so I robbed the plastic resister off it and put it on the wife's Excursion. When I initially had problems years ago I was able to find those plastic resistors by themselves...maybe through Herko...instead of having to buy the whole unit, but I can't find it. Can someone offer assistance into what I could do/try before having to drop the tank...which ain't happening for a while given it's still purdy full...

Dad had a broken wire that caused gauge to read full all the time. So I assume a short to ground could cause low readings. You might start by disconnecting the wire to see if it will go to full. That’s all I’ve got.

Yep t's found a ground somewhere. One of those cable tracker things from Harbor Freight might help find the trouble.

Yes, I did see that thread when I looked.

I plan on seeing if I can reach that plug and disconnecting it.

That's what I'm thinking too at this point.
