My truck is a 92 Explorer with a 4.0 and a 5spd overdrive standard transmission. One day the gear shifter started shaking real bad especially when I would begin to release the clutch. It would also do it under acceleration. I also noticed a slightly different exhaust noise and an exhaust smell inside the cab which then turned into an oily smell. The truck seems to run ok although I think it doesn't have the power it did before this started. I took it to the shop to have the motor mounts checked and the exhaust donut gasket checked. They couldn't find anything except a few pinholes in the exhaust and a leaky valve cover gasket. I would appreciate any help or ideas anyone may have.
I would venture a guess that it has something to do with your clutch assembly. I believe that a worn clutch can cause more feedback in the gear shifter. Even my 8k mile '02 has a little bit of feedback through the gear shifter. My '94 Ranger had a considerable amount and the clutch had 119k miles on it when it was sold.
The bad smell may be clutch. I have driven manual transmission vehicles exclusively and burning clutch is not a pleasant smell. It could *possibly* be mistaken as an exhaust smell.
The loss of power may be the clutch slipping. Take the truck out on the road and get into 3rd or 4th gear. Mash the gas and if the rpms creep and the speedometer stays the same, you have a slipping clutch.
I would like to think that the shop would be able to diagnose this, but they may have little experience with 5-speed vehicles.
How many miles do you have on the clutch??? I had a similer problem my clutch was slipping if you do what TBeck2000 said and either in 2nd or 3rd, maybe even 4th, i would first do second see then 3rd then 4th.....but shift the gear take you foot off the clutch and floor it, you will know if the clutch if slipping.....about the gear shift moving i have the same thing just replaced the clutch its the same way am assuming its normal, the shop did not mention anything about it and they road tested it.... BUt i was also hearing like grinding noises when the clutch was in and somtimes i could not switch gear the new clutch sovled that.....it cost me $500 bucks with labor i new the guy so he gave me a brake on the labor
