Hi. I’m currently driving my dads 1997 F150. Been in the family since new. Recently, the truck will start honking and flashing like someone poked the panic button on the key fob. Twice was when it was parked at home, and it happened twice yesterday when I was at the junkyard. At home, the truck was unlocked, not that it matters. What could be causing this? In the 25 years of ownership, this has never happened.
Any suggestions?
If it matters, it’s 4.6, auto, 2WD with 156,000 miles. Original window sticker says remote keyless entry with anti theft.
Also, is there a way to disable the panic feature but still keep the keyless entry?
search for "disabling the panic button on the keyfob.", without the quotes.
Others seem to have had this problem even on more modern vehicles. I suspect many threads have covered this topic and it's possible they may have a likely suspect to check for.
If it isn't the keyfob, then you have an electrical problem that most likely can only be diagnosed by the dealership. Might be easier in the long run to have them do a diagnostic then try to spend countless hours trying to track down a short or stray signal.
I removed the old batteries from the fob. It sat on the counter unpowered for several days. ‘Panic’ went off twice one day last week. So I unplugged the truck battery.
Some searching lead me to ‘leaky windshield syndrome’
I removed some lower dash plastic and found that the floor was wet, so I bought a tube of 3M Windo-weld to seal around the windshield. After I had pulled back all the trim, in cleaning out the channels, I sprayed some brake cleaner and saw some running down the inside of the glass, so chances were good that it had been leaking.
Hopefully drying the interior out and resealing the windshield will take care of it. We shall see.
